Ear Canal Infections

An ear canal infection, also known as otitis externa or “swimmer’s ear,” is an infection of the outer ear canal. It’s often caused by moisture, injury (e.g. from cotton buds), or bacterial or fungal overgrowth.

Symptoms may include:

  • Ear pain (especially when touching the ear)

  • Itching or swelling

  • Discharge

  • Hearing loss

ENT treatment options:

  • Ear cleaning – to remove debris or discharge

  • Prescription ear drops – antibiotic, antifungal, or steroid drops to reduce infection and inflammation

  • Pain relief – over-the-counter or prescription medication if needed

Keeping the ear dry during healing is important. If the infection is severe or recurring, Dr Long can offer targeted treatment and prevent complications.
