Grommets
Grommets (also called ear tubes) are tiny plastic or metal tubes inserted into the eardrum to drain fluid and allow air into the middle ear.

The procedure:
-
Done under general anaesthetic, especially in children
-
A small cut is made in the eardrum, fluid is suctioned out
-
The grommet is inserted to keep the space open
-
Takes about 15 minutes and usually done as day surgery
-
Grommets fall out on their own after 6–12 months as the eardrum heals
It’s a safe, quick procedure ENT specialists use to treat glue ear and prevent repeated ear infections.
