Grommets
Grommets (ear tubes) are small tubes inserted into the eardrum to drain fluid and improve hearing, commonly used to treat glue ear.
The procedure:
-
Performed under general anaesthetic
-
The surgeon makes a tiny cut in the eardrum to remove trapped fluid
-
A small grommet tube is placed into the eardrum to keep the middle ear ventilated
-
The procedure takes about 15 to 20 minutes
-
Usually done as a day surgery
Grommets typically stay in place for 6–12 months and fall out naturally as the eardrum heals. This helps reduce ear infections and improve hearing in children.
