Middle Ear Infection
A middle ear infection, or acute otitis media, is an infection behind the eardrum, usually caused by bacteria or viruses. It’s common in children but can affect adults too.
Symptoms may include:
-
Ear pain
-
Fever
-
Hearing loss
-
Irritability in children
-
Fluid or pus draining from the ear (if the eardrum bursts)
Treatment Options:
-
Antibiotics – if the infection is severe or doesn’t improve
-
Ear drainage (myringotomy) – in recurring or severe cases, a small incision may be made in the eardrum to drain fluid
-
Grommets – may be placed if infections are frequent
