Tonsillectomy
Tonsillectomy is the surgical removal of the tonsils, often done to treat recurrent tonsillitis or breathing problems like sleep apnea.
The procedure:
-
Usually performed under general anaesthetic
-
The surgeon removes the tonsils through the mouth—no external cuts
-
Techniques include using a scalpel, electrocautery, or newer methods like coblation
-
The surgery takes about 30 to 45 minutes
-
Typically a day surgery, but sometimes an overnight stay is needed
Recovery involves sore throat, pain management, and soft foods for about 1–2 weeks. The procedure helps reduce infections and improve breathing.
