Tonsillectomy for children
Tonsillectomy in children is surgery to remove the tonsils, often done for frequent infections or breathing problems.
The procedure:
-
Performed under general anaesthetic
-
The surgeon removes the tonsils through the child’s mouth—no external cuts
-
Methods include using a scalpel, electrocautery, or newer techniques like coblation to reduce bleeding
-
Surgery usually takes about 30 to 45 minutes
-
Typically a day surgery, but sometimes an overnight stay is needed for younger children or if recovery is complex
After surgery, children usually have a sore throat and need pain relief, soft foods, and rest for 1–2 weeks. Pain tends to be worse on day 5 and is usually better by day 9 or 10. It’s important to eat afterwards to slough off the inevitable scab buildup.
Avoid acidic foods like citrus fruit and bananas.
